In view of the rapid spread of Covid-19 pandemic, Essar Ports (Essar Bulk Terminal Limited) organised a #SafeHandsChallenge in Paradip to spread awareness about the disease. Over 150 students of Maa Ambika High School from Lockpada and Atharbanki villages were trained in the proper way of hand washing to prevent the spread of the virus. Free face masks and hand sanitisers were also distributed to the students, local villagers and health workers as part of the initiative.

The World Health Organisation declared the 2019–20 corona virus outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. COVID-19 is an infectious disease spread mainly through close contact and through respiratory droplets produced when people cough or sneeze. COVID-19 can also be transmitted by touching contaminated surfaces. It is most contagious when people are symptomatic, although the disease can spread even before symptoms appear. The disease causes mild to moderate respiratory illness and recovery is possible even without institutional care.

Recommended measures to prevent infection include frequent hand washing, social distancing (maintaining physical distance from others, especially from those with symptoms), covering one’s mouth while coughing and sneezing with a tissue or elbow, and keeping unwashed hands away from the face.

The use of masks is recommended for those who suspect they have the virus and their caregivers. Management involves treatment of symptoms, supportive care, isolation, and experimental measures.
